Item An Analysis of Bafilomycin A1’s Effect on Theiler’s Murine Encephalomyelitis Virus in Baby Hamster Kidney Cells(Keyhole Press, The University of Tampa, 2023-04) Chacon, Georgina; Bindra, Amrita; Potpora, SydneyTheiler’s murine encephalomyelitis virus (TMEV) is an important picornavirus used to model the effects of multiple sclerosis in mice. The purpose of this experiment was to test the effect of the drug Bafilomycin A1 on TMEV replication in BHK cells. We conducted our study on three distinct samples, one sample was not treated with Bafilomycin A1, the next was treated with Bafilomycin A1 before infection with TMEV, and the last was treated with Bafilomycin A1 after the cells were infected with TMEV. We conducted four different tests on our samples. The first test was a Plaque Assay; the results of this assay showed fewer plaques in our pre-treatment sample, which indicated that TMEV was inhibited when treated with Bafilomycin A1 before the cells were infected. The next test was a Western Blot; the results we obtained from this test confirmed the successful infection of the cells in each sample with TMEV. We then conducted a TCID50 assay; the data validated the results we obtained in our Plaque Assay. Our last test was an immunofluorescence assay; the images confirmed and showed that Bafilomycin A1 is more effective before infection with TMEV. In the end, we concluded that Bafilomycin A1 significantly inhibited TMEV when it was used preemptively to treat cells. This paper was produced in Dr. Freundt’s BIO 315 course.Item An Analysis of the City of Tampa Bay's Comprehensive Emergency Operations Plan(The Office of Undergraduate Research and Inquiry, The University of Tampa, 2018) Joseph, ColinAs with any other city, Tampa Bay is prone to a number of hazards and disasters that could potentially pose a danger for citizens and the general business environment. To prepare for cases like this, it is important to have a plan that can be easily implemented to mitigate the effects of any potential natural disaster/hazard that could ultimately endanger the lives of citizens and business owners within the area. As such, the City of Tampa Comprehensive Emergency Operations Plan (CEOP) provides a detailed overview of the various areas that need to be addressed, as well as specific actions that need to be taken, in the event of any sort of natural disaster/hazard. In terms of the current CEOP, it provides an introduction that outlines the importance of having an established operations plan in place. The plan’s introduction includes detailed descriptions on various elements of the plan itself, as well as the interim steps of the plan’s preparation, which are useful for outlining the reasoning behind the plan’s design. In other words, this provides an explanation for the plan’s purpose, along with why the plan is designed in this specific manner. From a more holistic perspective, the plan is divided into numerous chapters which, in my opinion, is useful for citizens as it makes the plan easier to read and understand, by providing a building infrastructure for every element of the plan, in order to ensure a greater understanding and awareness for all/most citizens.Item Applying a Marxist Perspective to Giotto(Keyhole Press, The University of Tampa, 2021) Novakovic, Daniella; Trentinella, Dr. RosemarieThe following research exploration investigates the relationship between Giotto’s work in the heart of the Arena Chapel and the individual who commissioned it, Enrico Scrovegni. Accused of being a usurer, Scrovegni commissioned the Arena Chapel in the hopes of gaining clemency for his dubiously acquired wealth, as usury had been a sin commensurate with the betrayal of Christ in medieval Europe. This is emphasized in the depiction of Scrovegni in Last Judgment, where Scrovegni emblematically presents a miniature of the Chapel to the Virgin Mary, who is regarded as the intercessor of forgiveness through her son Jesus Christ in Catholic Mariology. By using his wealth to influence the intent of Giotto’s artwork – not only to inspire respect amongst his peers, but for the purpose of salvation through the Virgin Mother – Scrovegni has licensed art historians to study his involvement in the Arena Chapel through the retroactive lens of Marxism, a concept chiefly concerned with monetary and social principles. This essay was written in Dr. Rosemarie Trentinella’s ART 225 class.Item The Asphalt Labyrinth: An Examination of the Impact of Transit on American Cities(Keyhole Press, The University of Tampa, 2023-04) Katsulos, TheoThe dominance of automotive transit in the United States cannot be denied; we drive more than any other mode of transportation, and ubiquity of automotives has spread to a cultural level. The pervasiveness of this infrastructure impacts nearly every aspect of our lives, especially for those living in urban environments. The economic burden of private transport is often overlooked, be that maintenance or opportunity cost for not owning a vehicle. Environmental costs involved in the mass usage of fossil fuels have global impacts like climate change and local impacts like reduced air quality and acid rain. The social aspect comes from the tendency to design American cities around cars, not people, eliminating necessary social spaces, reinforcing harmful aspects of American personal ideology, and exacerbating issues of classism. This paper explains these issues and describes how an increased investment in infrastructure can remedy those issues and improve citizens’ quality of life. This paper was produced in Dr. Lauro’s AWR 201 course.Item Can a Democracy Be an Empire?(Keyhole Press, The University of Tampa, 2023-04) Zodkoy, MaxThe goal of this paper is to analyze how the United States acted as an empire during the first half of the Cold War by influencing the political, social, and economic policies of countries under its sphere of influence. This was accomplished through an analysis of secondary sources discussing American influence in Europe, Asia, and Latin America. In addition, an analysis of primary sources was done to look at the legacy of the American Empire in other countries. The paper finds that the United States did act as an empire as its influence was far-reaching enough to change many countries’ policies to suit the United States during the first half of the Cold War. In addition, the paper finds that the reason the United States did this was to increase the quality of life for its citizens and stop the expansion of communism. This paper was produced in Dr. Lauro’s AWR 201 course.Item Editor's Introduction(Keyhole Press, The University of Tampa, 2021) Theodosiadis, DimitraItem Editor’s Introduction(Keyhole Press, The University of Tampa, 2022-04) Sperry, MaggieItem Editor’s Introduction(Keyhole Press, The University of Tampa, 2023-04) Disharoon, CassieItem The Effectiveness and Accurateness of Goniometric Devices in Lower Extremity Injuries(The Office of Undergraduate Research and Inquiry, The University of Tampa, 2018) May, RebeccaBackground: Lower extremity injuries add up to be the leading cause of emergency room visits and trauma hospitalizations among people aged under 65 years’ old. Goniometers are the devices clinically used to measure range of motion of various joints in patients receiving treatment or therapy following an injury or procedure. Although goniometric devices allow for simple measurements and are relatively cheap to manufacture, they have limitations that need to be addressed. Research Question and Hypothesis: The research question of this study is as follows: Do traditional and modern goniometric devices provide accurate joint range of motion measurement among adult patients with lower extremity operations and/or injuries in the United States? The hypothesis of this research study is that advanced modern goniometric devices are more accurate than traditional goniometric devices. Objectives: This research aims to examine the accuracy of goniometric devices, to determine whether or not the accuracy of these goniometric devices impacts the recovery process of patients, and to assess if new range of motion devices are more accurate and effective than traditional devices. Methods: This study is structured as a Quasi-experimental study which includes 4 phases. Phase 1 includes a pretest to determine overall range of motion, Phase 2 collects measurements utilizing traditional goniometers, Phase 3 collects measurements utilizing modern goniometers, and Phase 4 concludes with a post-test to reexamine overall joint range of motion. With IRB approval, 380 participants over the age of 18 will be recruited from Tampa General Hospital, Florida Hospital Tampa, St. Joseph’s Hospital, and/or Tampa Community Hospital. Analysis: Statistical analyses will be run to determine the sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive of each goniometric device. These results will be compared amongst the two groups of goniometric assessment devices.Item The Effects of Trauma and Immigration on Second Language Acquisition(Keyhole Press, The University of Tampa, 2023-04) King, AshleyResearch studies have demonstrated a positive relationship between trauma and immigration to a second language learning. Though some immigrants learn a second language before immigrating, this paper will focus on the percentage that do not learn the language beforehand but learn it after moving. I present research from the last decade and conducted research by surveying four different and unrelated immigrants to gauge their thoughts on this topic. This information was used to demonstrate that the effects of trauma on an immigrant can cause delays in second language acquisition, specifically English. This paper was produced in Dr. DeMil’s SPA 499 course.Item Effects of Ultravoiolet Radiation on Staphylococcus aureus Biofilm Integrity: an ultrastructure analysis using Scanning Electron Microscopy(The Office of Undergraduate Research and Inquiry, The University of Tampa, 2018) Albert, GabrielleThe goal of the present study was to evaluate the effects of ultraviolet (UV) radiation of various wavelengths (UV-A, UV-B, UV-C) on the integrity of Staphylococcus aureus biofilm structure. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) was employed to visualize and qualitatively assess damage to the ultrastructure of S. aureus biofilms cultivated on plastic coverslips after exposure to UV-radiation. The results of the study revealed that the high-energy wavelengths of UV-B and UV-C could effectively induce apoptosis with no evidence of intact biofilm formation after exposure. Therefore, such wavelengths of UV-radiation may be employed as a supplementary mechanism for targeted biofilm decontamination to further minimize the occurrences of biofilm-related nosocomial infections.Item The Effects of Voice Familiarity on Attention and Memory During the Dichotic Listening Test(Keyhole Press, The University of Tampa, 2021) England, Marina; Blessing, Dr. StephenThis research proposal investigates the effect of the presence of a familiar voice on memory in the context of a dichotic listening test. In this proposed study, 10 undergraduate students attending The University of Tampa will be instructed to recall phrases spoken by either an arbitrary speaker or a familiar celebrity. The number of words recalled between conditions will be compared using a paired-samples t-test. If the results support my hypothesis, the t-test will show a significant difference between the means of each condition. This will provide evidence towards the claim that an increased familiarity of voice may lead to higher auditory memory recall. If the results do not support my hypothesis, the t-test will not show a significant difference between words recalled in either condition. Overall, the study will provide more insight on the relationship between celebrity voice familiarity and performance on a recall task in young adults. This essay was written in Dr. Blessing’s PSY 425 class.Item El Impacto de Machismo en la Voluntad de Aceptar Tratamiento(Keyhole Press, The University of Tampa, 2021) Bernabe, Alyssa; Bryant, Jasmine; Giordano, Brianna; Owens, Arianna; Miller, Dr. AlyssiaThis study examined the relationship of machismo scores and the willingness of people in Hispanic/Latino communities to accept medical treatment. Participants were asked to complete a survey asking them many questions about cultural ideals and medical-care habits to assign them a machismo score. Ethnicity was not related to higher machismo scores. Men across all cultures had higher machismo scores than women across all cultures. A relationship was found between machismo score and pain threshold necessary to take medication, but could not be correlated with any specific ethnicity. The results of this study are likely a result of the fact that many of the participants were born in America or lived in the United States for many years and had adapted to the culture to a point where machismo wasn’t a major factor. This essay was written for Prof. Miller’s SPA 251 class.Item Everyday Nationalism: The Easter Rising of 1916 and the Making of Modern Irish Independence(Keyhole Press, The University of Tampa, 2021) Ingram, Julia; Palmer, Dr. AshleyIn 1916, a group of Irish nationalists known as the Irish Volunteers rose up against British rule in a weeklong rebellion that became known as the Easter Rising. The Irish Volunteers were ultimately crushed by the British military and failed to establish an independent Irish republican government. However, the Easter Rising encouraged a heightened sense of nationalism among everyday people which led to the popularization of the Irish independence movement culminating in the Irish Free State in 1922. This paper addresses how the nationalist organizations and the Catholic Church strategically framed the Easter Rising to garner public support and consequently, how the public internalized the nationalistic fervor in their personal letters and diaries. This essay was written in Dr. Palmer’s HIS 400 class.Item Feminism and Societal Ideals: The Artistic Works of Louise Bourgeois(Keyhole Press, The University of Tampa, 2022-04) Rappa-Lasa, LaurenLouise Bourgeois (1911-2010) is one of the 20th centuries most influential female artists. Over the course of her 70-year career, she used personal life experiences to create art that challenged societal norms and gave a voice to future female artists in a male dominated profession. Bourgeois explored numerous themes such as sexuality, domesticity, and femininity; all of which were seen as taboo subjects for women to discuss. Bourgeois’ paintings and sculptures can be viewed in museums around the world and remain relevant and evocative to modern viewers. This essay was written in Dr. Rosemarie Trentinella’s ART 225 class.Item From Playing to Praying: How a Football Game Is Shining a Light on First Amendment Rights(Keyhole Press, The University of Tampa, 2023-04) Giaquinto, RachelIn 2019, the Court of Appeals 11th Circuit ruled in favor of the Florida High School Athletic Association and its decision to prevent prayer from being shared over an intercom at the state football championship game in 2015. The decision, which has been appealed by Cambridge Christian High School, highlights the distinction between private and government speech when it comes to the First Amendment. While religious speech such as prayer is a protected form of speech, this case shows what happens to such speech when it is given on government property. As of now the high school continues to await the decision of the appeal. This paper examines the legal documentation of the case and precedents set by similar cases to better analyze the decision of the appeals court and the reasons the high school filed for an appeal of their ruling. This paper was produced in Professor Foltz’s SPE 315 course.Item Front Matter for Q: Journal of Undergraduate Research & Inquiry, Volume 2, Spring 2021(Keyhole Press, The University of Tampa, 2021) Theodosiadis, Dimitra, Editor in Chief; Borjas, Iovanna, Student Editorial Staff; Landau, Taylor, Student Editorial Staff; Lazansky, Rebecca, Student Editorial Staff; Miranda, Tatiana, Student Editorial Staff; Rodriguez Rivera, Celina, Student Editorial Staff; Sabol, Katherine, Student Editorial Staff; Sperry, Maggie, Student Editorial StaffItem Front Matter for Q: Journal of Undergraduate Research & Inquiry, Volume 3, Spring 2022(Keyhole Press, The University of Tampa, 2022-04) Sperry, Maggie, Editor in Chief; Maistro Brasolin, Giovanna, Student Editorial Staff; Eolin, Lauren, Student Editorial Staff; McCormick, John, Student Editorial Staff; Paolucci, Lauren, Student Editorial Staff; Rainey, Skylar, Student Editorial Staff; Ramirez, Alejandro, Student Editorial Staff; Sanchez, Isabella, Student Editorial Staff; Staab, Andrew, Student Editorial Staff; Vernet, Jessica, Student Editorial StaffItem Front Matter for Q: Journal of Undergraduate Research & Inquiry, Volume 4, Spring 2023(Keyhole Press, The University of Tampa, 2023-04) Disharoon, Cassie, Editor in Chief; Bolivar, Madeleine, Student Editorial Staff; Brėnélus, Evana, Student Editorial Staff; Burdick, Leah, Student Editorial Staff; Conley, Krystal, Student Editorial Staff; Domenick, Madison, Student Editorial Staff; Florczak, Gregory, Student Editorial Staff; George, Sarrah, Student Editorial Staff; Harris, Myles, Student Editorial Staff; Salowe, Charlotte, Student Editorial StaffItem [Front Matter] Q: Journal of Undergraduate Research & Inquiry(The Office of Undergraduate Research and Inquiry, 2018) Alex Sullivan, Co-Editor-in-Chief; Sara Casareto, Co-Editor-in-Chief; Meghan Lebrun, Layout EditorIncludes cover art, mission statement, honorable mention, table of contents and editor bios.
