We would like to thank the staff of the Saunders Wrillng Center (Emily Kirk, Jose Martinez, Jill Rudolph. and Lisa Suarez) for their participation in the judging process. Our adviser. Dr. Lisa Birnbaum, deserves special recognition for all her editing and guidance in helping make this project successful once again. Our publication wouldn't be possible without the support of the Freshman Composition faculty and everyone who shared their work with us. The many talented writers at the University of Tampa deserve more credit than we can give.
The staff of the Saunders Writing Center solicits work for the Wordsmith Awards from students in all Freshman Composition courses. though this collection represents essays from only two of the courses. English 10l and 102. The first piece. a descriptive paragraph which was awarded a Special Mention. ls an example of the briefer writing exercises often assigned in English 101.

Description

The Wordsmith Awards showcase the finest examples of the essays created by First-Year Writing students. The staff of the Saunders Writing Center solicits work during the fall semester and selects the best pieces for publication.
