My California is a collection of short stories either set in California or whose
characters are displaced Californians. This is not the California of sun, surf, and
perpetual parties. The themes include religion, incest, abuse, and deceit. Many of
the stories take a look at the world of children who fear the violent, dangerous,
and corrupt adult world. Other stories explore family and the expectations for a
future that is not guaranteed to be idyllic. With humor and passion, we learn that
life is treacherous and one is lucky if one even makes it to adulthood.
