Elevator Diaries: Memories of The University of Tampa

Abstract

On the 75th Anniversary of The University of Tampa, interviews were conducted with presidents, alumni, faculty, and staff in the oldest operating elevator in the state of Florida, located in Plant Hall on the University campus.
Each participant tells of how they came to UT, what it was like at that time, and how it has changed since then. Highlights include current president Ronald Vaughn, who talks about the history of UT; Dick Cheshire, president of UT from 1977-86, who discusses the scholarships he instituted for local students and the university’s decision to drop “big-time” football; Michael Truscott, Dana Professor of Economics, who began teaching at UT when 20% percent of the University students were boot strappers from the Vietnam War; and Freddie Solomon, NFL Champion and UT Alumni, who talks about football at UT.
