Abstract
Respondez! (1992-2015) became Respond, starting with the 2016 issue. Respondez! is a poem written by Walt Whitman in 1871 as a call to action. The Respond staff interprets Whitman’s poem as a call for new, emerging ideas to be brought fourth and challenged. The journal embodies Walt Whitman’s poem by aiming to publish informative research that challenges mainstream assumptions.
I hope that you will enjoy the papers in this edition of Respondez! and that they will inspire you in your own writing. The competition was fierce this year -we received 23 interesting submissions-and therefore we had difficulty selecting which papers to publish. The seven included here were chosen for many reasons, including conceptual originality, composition, content, and writing technique.
Many people worked hard to make Respondez! 2006 a reality. As always, many thanks go out to Dr. Piper, who always supports the board in its efforts and encourages Honors students to submit their work for publication. I want to thank Melanie Moore one more time for continuing to be a member of the board, and I hope that she will find her life outside college fun and fulfilling. I would also like to thank Jennifer Tarr and Jonathan Ash for their dedicated work on Respondez! again this year. Thank you to Ashley Malinowski, our newest member, for putting up with my interview questions and agreeing to join our crazy group. Furthermore, I would like to personally thank Min Nemoy for all her help and support. And a big thanks also goes to Dr. Steinhardt, for contacting the photographer on our behalf for the beautiful cover image.
Finally, I would like to extend my personal thanks to everyone who took the time to submit a paper (or more). Without writers, there would naturally be no publication, and everyone who submitted should be proud of their hard work. There were so many excellent papers that our decision was very difficult, and I would like to encourage everyone to participate in future editions of the journal.

Respondez! is the University of Tampa's journal for nonfiction writing and is published annually by the University of Tampa Honors Program. Students from all disciplines are encouraged to submit research papers, personal essays, and other nonfiction writings. We welcome written responses to the articles, though the authors are solely responsible for their opinions. We are also receptive to any suggestions you may have concerning publication.
