Respondez! Vol. 13

Abstract

Respondez! (1992-2015) became Respond, starting with the 2016 issue. Respondez! is a poem written by Walt Whitman in 1871 as a call to action. The Respond staff interprets Whitman’s poem as a call for new, emerging ideas to be brought fourth and challenged. The journal embodies Walt Whitman’s poem by aiming to publish informative research that challenges mainstream assumptions.
Welcome to Respondez! 2004. The publication you hold in your hands is the result of dedicated teamwork on behalf of both my editorial board and other individuals. Special thanks go to Marshall Pierce for fixing our layout file problem and to Nicole Marinake for helping me figure out the cover layout at the eleventh hour. Melanie Moore served as our unofficial cover editor for the second year in a row, finding photos to go on the cover and meeting with me to discuss the ideas that became the cover for this year's edition. I owe a great deal to Bob Giles at Compass Press for all of his patience and advice (and our beautiful cover!). Thanks are also greatly owed to our layout editor, Julie Oas, for finishing the layout q.uring one of the busiest weeks of the semester. Dr. Richard Piper has once more proven invaluable by offering support and advice, but also demonstrating faith in my and the board's abilities.
I graduate the month after this publication is released and I am finding this time to be bittersweet. I have enjoyed my time working on Respondez! and have learned a great deal about writing from being an editor. I started on the Respondez! editorial board in the fall of 2001. When I was asked to be editor-in-chief of the 2004 edition, I was hesitant. On one hand, I felt my experience as an editorial board member as well as my leadership experience qualified me as editor; on the other hand, I was hesitant to take on such a great (and public) responsibility. However, the honor of being asked to take on this duty by Dr. Piper was too great to decline the request. The process of producing this publication has been an irreplaceable learning experience for me and I am so glad I took the job.
I hope you enjoy and learn from this publication as much as I have.
Sincerely, Erin Wells Editor-In-Chief
