Respondez! Vol. 12

Abstract

Respondez! (1992-2015) became Respond, starting with the 2016 issue. Respondez! is a poem written by Walt Whitman in 1871 as a call to action. The Respond staff interprets Whitman’s poem as a call for new, emerging ideas to be brought fourth and challenged. The journal embodies Walt Whitman’s poem by aiming to publish informative research that challenges mainstream assumptions.
"Implied in the philosophy of Honors at the University of Tampa is the desire to stand at the boundary between the known and the unknown, the perceived and the barely- perceived needs and values in our society, between a centered and yet always open and growing self To give voice to that which because of our prevalent mindset is now voiceless, shape to what now goes unseen, strength and life to that which is crushed and unempowered: this is the creative task to which our Honors learning community commits itself" -Dr. Francis Gillen Founder, The Honors Program The University of Tampa
Letter From the Editors:
The 2003 edition of Respondez! has been a long year in the making. From submission collection to copy-editing to cover design to layout, one dedicated group of UT Honors students has made it their mission to create a journal representative of both the Honors Program and the university.
For the first time in a great while, Respondez! functioned under the leadership of two co-editors. It has been our pleasure to guide the publication throughout the fall and spring semesters to the end result you now hold in your hands.
The people who have helped to make this publication the success it is are too many to name in the small space we have been allotted. However, a select few deserve to be recognized for going above and beyond the call of duty. This includes 2002-2003 Layout Editor Jennifer Murray. This publication would be vastly different without her design and tremendous efforts in successfully completing layout of the entire journal on less than a week's notice. She devoted many hours to the journal's assembly, crafting six papers into the book you are now reading, and managed not to kill either of her editors in accomplishing this feat. Additionally, the look of this year's cover was heavily influenced by the mind of Melanie Moore. The idea of wrapping a photograph around the cover, as well as the selection of the picture itself, were both her contributions. Last but not least, Respondez! 2003 would not exist without the patience, guidance, and support of Dr. J. Richard Piper, UT Honors Program Director.
To say that members of the 2003 editorial board were an opinionated group would be an understatement. Each of us had a distinct idea of what Respondez! 2003 should be. By working together, we have taken the best submissions, encompassing diverse subject matter, and combined them in a single volume for an interesting and informative read. We feel we have succeeded. Respondez! 2003 tackles the areas of science, religion, sex, and politics, offering unflinching insight into some of the controversies that have shaped our world.
The staff of this year's Respondez! has raised the standards for what this journal is and what it will become in the future. We challenge next year's editor and staff to keep up the tradition no matter what.
Deborah Bauer & Chelsea Collier, Co-Editors-in-Chief, Respondez! 2003
